If you are a cat owner, you’ve likely struggled with the age-old issue of your cat scratching on your chairs, sofas, ottomans, etc. And, you’re used to hearing the unwanted, distinct sound of claws on fabric.
Fortunately, I’ve found some easy and fairly cost-effective methods to deter my cat from continuing to shred my furniture. Interested to hear? Then, just keep reading!…
FIRSTLY, I invested in some double-sided, clear sticky tape, that’s made just for the purpose of hindering cats scratching on furniture. I purchased mine from Petco. It’s not inexpensive, but, compared to the cost of reupholstering, it’s a bargain!
I wasn’t sure if it would work, as I hadn’t heard of anyone else’s experience, but, was ready to take the gamble. I easily installed it everywhere my cat was prone to scratching. Because of it’s clear nature, it wasn’t too obtrusive or ugly. And, tamed the fabric bits that were sticking out.
This stuff really worked great! After one or two attempts at the old behavior, my cat no longer had a desire to try to scratch over the taped areas.
To add a bit of extra “good behavior” incentives, I placed some cat scratching posts/boxes at the same locations. This gave my cat a positive outlet for his natural scratching instinct.
If your cat isn’t drawn to using a scratching post or pad, try sprinkling it with a bit of catnip. This will probably entice him to give it a go!
