Healthy cats are happier and tend to live longer.  Here are some tips to get your cat down to a healthy weight:

  1. First, you should consult your cat’s vet. Every cat is different, and every breed has their own uniqueness. Your vet can help you get started.
  2. The average cat only needs 20-30 calories per pound a day. See what is the calorie count on your cat’s food and how much you are feeding them a day.  durham pet sitters
  3. Consider buying diet cat food instead of what you normally buy. You can gradually mix it in with your cat’s food over the course of a few weeks to get your cat acclimated to the new food.
  4. Cut out the grazing. Some of us leave food out all day for cats to eat. Try just leaving the food out for an hour and taking it away.
  5. Cut out the treats. Treats are heavy in calories and will not help your endeavor.  durham pet sitters
  6. Encourage your cat to hunt by moving their food around each time you feed them.
  7. If your cat eats and enjoys dry food, you could get a feeding ball that gets your cat to workout for a nugget of food.
  8. Exercise your cat more! You can do this by having mini play sessions through out the day, taking your cat on a walk (if they’ll do it), and becoming more engaged with your cat during play time.
  9. Keep your cat supplied with fresh water. Cats, just like humans, sometimes eat when they are bored
  10. Ignore your cat’s begging!
